Influence of bioethanol as an additive to diesel oil on the performance of diesel engine

Abstract

The main target of the diploma thesis was to determine the impact of self-ignition engine powered by the diesel fuel with the addition of bioethanol on selected indicators of its operation, such as working parameters of the engine, as well as the impact of this fuel on the emission of toxic components of exhaust fumes. The study was carried out on a test bench equipped with a Perkins engine 1104C-44 and measuring equipment. The engine complied with the emission standard of EU Stage II G emission components. The work consists of an introduction, four theoretical chapters on: synthesis of knowledge about bioethanol, methodology for determining the basic parameters of the self-ignition engine work, methodology for determining selected combustion parameters in this engine, as well as empirical studies of the Perkins 1104C-44 combustion engine and a chapter summarizing the work and conclusions resulting from the analysis. In the first and second chapter of the work, a literature analysis was conducted on the synthesis of knowledge about bioethanol as an additive to power the self-ignition engine. Then chemical and physical properties as well as the main purposes of bioethanol application are presented. In the next part of the work bioethanol was compared with other bioalcohol and conclusions were drawn that it is the most beneficial addition to the combustion engines from among the bioalcohols analysed. Classification of bioethanol was performed due to the generation of biofuels. For each of them, methods for obtaining this bioalcohol are described. Then, the advantages and disadvantages of bioethanol as a fuel as well as the requirements for its transport and storage are discussed. The third chapter describes the methodology for determining the basic parameters of the self-ignition engine operation. Then, a literature analysis of the methodology for the determination of normalized components of burning process in a self-ignition engine was carried out. The fourth chapter presents the research part of the work. The research object, test stand, measuring apparatus as well as physicochemical properties of the examined fuels have been described. Then the results of the tests were illustrated. The final chapter of the work is dedicated to its summary and conclusions based on the analysis of the obtained research results. In summary, the conclusions and observations drawn from the study are a solution to the problem covered in the work, namely determine the impact of using bioethanol as fuel for the self-ignition engine on the working parameters of this engine, as well as the emission of burning process components.
