Jan Szmidt was born in Bilgoraj. He received M.Sc., Ph.D. and D.Sc. degree from the Faculty of Electronics Warsaw University of Technology in 1976, 1985 and 1995, respectively. In 1976 he joined Institute of Electron Technology (currently Institute of Microelectronics and Optoelectronics) of Warsaw University of Technology, where he works by now. He was a trainee at the Institute of Electron Technology "CEMI" and at the Carnegie Mellon University, Pitsburgh, USA. In 1999, he became an Associate Professor. His research interests are concentrated on characterisation of thin films for microelectronics, optoelectronics and nanoelectronics. He is involved in projects concerned research on development of synthesis methods of diamond like carbon (DLC) and diamond-like boron nitride (DLBN) films, physicochemical properties of DLC and DLBN. He is author and co-author of over 100 papers and scientific studies as well as main executor and author of reports of more that 20 scientific research projects. He is also reviewer of number of journals and co-author of 2 patents. He was Chairman of several conferences and Workshops. From 2002 to 2005 he was an Associate Dean for Development of the Faculty of Electronics and Information Technology, Warsaw University of Technology. Since 2006 he has been a Head of Electronic Materials and Microsystem Technology Division, Institute of Microelectronics and Optoelectronics, WUT. Presently Jan Szmidt is a Dean of Faculty of Electronics and Information Technologies.
