AbstractThe paper compares the simulation results concerning two types of dangerous failures of the autoclave filled with hazardous media subjected elevated pressure (420 MPa). A non-stationary, 2-D axisymmetric, physical-numerical model of the system is proposed. It is assumed that it is possible to break off the mandrel of the autoclave or the whole cork assembly. In both cases the broken off structural elements are driven by the leaking medium and the leakage of the high pressure liquid into the environment is present. It is accompanied by the formation of the shock wave propagating in the air. The maximum speed and kinetic energy of the broken off elements has been determined, along with the characteristics of the shock wave. On the basis of parameters characterizing the shock wave generated by the discharged liquid, a TNT equivalent was determined.
