AbstractWe have investigated the use of gold nanoparticles and nematic liquid crystal (5CB) composites to create a network in a form of one-dimensional (1D) photonic structure. We show that by heating the composite to the isotropic phase, gold nanoparticles reversibly self-assemble into highly regular structures. The morphologies and associated LC patterns are controlled by the heating rate, concentration, and elastic properties of the LC. Those effects emerge from the phase separation process which is known in literature [1-5]. In this work, we are demonstrating an influence of the capillary internal diameter on the period of such structures. Our experimental results show that doubling the capillary diameter increases twice the period of the structure.
