Investigations on bitumen/polymer composition as insulating/seal materials

AbstractThe aim of these investigations was to prepare binders, based on coal-tar pitch or pitch-asphalt blends modified by polymers, witch would be successfully applied in building industry. To modify pitch, poly(oxyethylene)diol (molecular weight: 2000) was used. The polymer affects benzo[a]pyrene very effectively. After choosing the optimal conditions of the mixing process, homogeneous pitch-polymer compositions were obtained. With the purpose of improving their elastoplastic properties, to the compositions obtained, the following additives were introduced: petroleum asphalts 9of various penetrations and softening points), plasticizers 9petroleum and coal oils), granular fillers (among others, those of thixotropic properties) and other polymers 9butadiene-styrene latex and balmy rosin). Coal-tar pitch and petroleum asphalt, modified by polymers (e.g. poly(oxyethylene)diols) as well as by oil plasticizers, B-S latex and fillers (chalk, colloidal silica), meet requirements of modern bituminous binders and can be applied as insulating-seal materials in building industry. The modified bitumens are characterized by increased adhesion to mineral aggregates and concrete, advantageous resistance to freezing as well as good plasticity and thermal stabitity. In the light of this, it is also possible to use them as binders in road construction.
