New method for micro-clinching analysis

AbstractWith the development of microprocessor, actuators and structural micro-components, new concepts of micro-electro-mechanical systems/machines are constantly being introduced. One of the consequences of this tendency is seeking for best ways to connect metal micro-elements. Because of tools simplicity, no additional fastening elements and the undisturbed structure of the material, clinching appears to be a promising solution for many applications in micro-scale joining. W method for the analysis of micro-clinching process is proposed in the paper. It is based on a research stack-up dedicated to implementing the process for use in a micro-scale. Designed system allows to easily change key parameters of the process. Three types of tests of the micro-joint strength, including preparation of samples are also proposed. They cover tension in direction normal and the tangential to the plane of the sheet direction as well as the combined loading. In the article FEM analysis of a few variants of micro-clinching using commercial MSC.Marc software have been carried out which have been compared with experimental results afterwards.
