Experimental and numerical investigation of entomopter flapping wings aerodynamic performance

Entomopter is the one of the youngest group of aircrafts. Conditions in which they operate are unusual for well-known flying objects. Aerodynamic phenomena during entomopter flight are not well recognized. In the other hand for design process ability of phenomenon and forces predictions is necessary. Current work is an attempt of evaluation CFD as engineering tool for designing entomopter. Results of computations were compared with experiment ducted on robot in water tunnel. Test device simulates wing motion of entomopter flying under condition of Reynolds number 8000. For computation commercial solverFluent13 has been used. Both two and three-dimensional models have been used. During testing forces and moments were measured. Additionally dye flow visualization was performed. This amount of data has allowed for precise analysis of generated aerodynamic loads and qualitative analysis of flow-field around the wing.
