Structural and magnetic investigation of mechanically alloyed Fe 10 Al 90

The Fe 10 Al 90 alloy was synthesized from high purity elements in a conventional horizontal low energy ball mill. The X - ray patterns show that the mechanical alloying (MA) results in the formation of an amorphous phase coexisting with a nanocrystalline fee solid solution. The lattice parameter of Al(Fe) solid solution after 200 h of MA is 4.034 Å being comparable with 4.05 Å for pure Al. The final average crystallite size of the synthesized solid solution is 7 nm. The DSC and X - ray diffraction reveal that for short milling periods FeAl 3 forms directly from Al and Fe whereas for longer milling periods its formation proceeds through the crystallization of amorphous phase and decomposition of Al(Fe) solid solution. The reduction of magnetic moment per Fe atom is accompanied by a monotonic suppression of the Curie temperature from 1040 to 600 K which reveals a reduction in the exchange interaction at longer MA.
