Analysis of filtration properties of fibrous filter materials using computer simulation of their loading with dust

AbstractIn the paper is presented a description of the changes in the essential gas-filtration parameters of the fibrous filter materials used for respiratory protection. For that purpose, a numerical model was developed to simulate the nonsteady-state filtration specific for the two mechanisms of deposition: direct interception and diffusion. Analysis of the local changes in porosity of the filter layers and flow rate of the aerosol permitted to determine the character of the essential parameters of filtration for any type of filter media and dust hazard conditions. The performance of the model was tested on a special station for simulation of the performance of respiratory protective equipment. It is shown that the model permits a comparative evaluation of the filtration properties of multilayer filter media used for respiratory protection, thus facilitating the design and selection of respiratory protective filters for various working environments.
