Polymer-optical fibres for data transmission

AbstractThis chapter gives an introduction to digital transmission systems in general and polymer optical data communication in particular. Starting from theoretical aspects covering modulation, optimum reception, channels with added white Gaussian noise and inter-symbol interference the most important modulation formats in POF communication links will be introduced as well as equalisation techniques. In addition to the rather information-theoretic aspects, also operation principles and physics of optical light sources such as light-emitting diodes (LEDs), resonant-cavity LEDs and lasers, but also the most common photodiode types are explained. Finally, a comprehensive overview on current research efforts for 1 Gbit/s transmission over polymer optical fibre using different modulation formats, equalisation schemes and devices is given with a short summary on standards and products.
