Abstract

In this chapter, the current knowledge of the influence of nanostructure on the biological activity of pure titanium is briefly summarized. The available literature indicated the tendency of a favorable impact of the grain refinement on the biological properties of titanium. In this review, special emphasis is placed on the influence of the ultrafine grained and nanocrystalline titanium surface properties on protein adsorption and cell adhesion processes.
