Studies on the thermal behaviour and safety of a novel thermostable explosive 5,5′,6,6′-tetranitro-2,2′-bibenzimidazole

5,5′,6,6′-tetranitro-2,2′-bibenzimidazole (TNBBI) is a highly thermostable explosive. Thermal decomposition tests were performed and kinetic parameters of the decomposition reactions were determined, which for the initial level of conversion (α = 0.03) and hermetic conditions are aEa = 122 ± 26 kJ·mol−1, and logA = 5.77, respectively. During the thermal decomposition of TNBBI, volatile intermediates are formed, which influence the kinetic parameters of the decomposition reaction, and therefore the thermal decomposition tests should be performed in hermetic vessels. The safety of TNBBI was determined in terms of such parameters as: maximum safe temperature of technological processes, TMS = 211 °C, SADT temperature = 252 °C.
