54 Gbps OOK Transmission Using Single Mode VCSEL up to 1 km OM4 MMF

AbstractSuccessful 54 Gbps OOK transmission over 1 km of multimode OM4 fibre is demonstrated. The decisive advantages of the single mode over multimode VCSEL in transmission experiments are shown. In this paper, we demonstrate successful record transmission of 54 Gbps up to 1 km MMF using On-Off Keying (OOK) amplitude modulation, SM VCSEL and digital equalization exclusively at the receiver. Furthermore, we compare the SM and MM VCSEL performance for various transmission distances.
