Mechatronic System for Weeding

Abstract

A mechatronic system for automatic elimination of weeds is proposed. It is to be installed on a farm tractor and it basically consists of a microprocessor unit, which controls a mechanical module that cuts roots of the weeds underground. The control system employs output signals from a machine vision module, based on a Convolutional Neural Network, distinguishing the cultivated plant from the weeds. The basic operational parameters of the system are: overall dimensions: 300 × 400 × 400 mm (without the cutting arms); torque at each cutting blade: 100 Nm; power supply: DC 24 V; diameter of the cultivated plant: 200 mm; breadth of the bed: 100 mm; speed: 3–6 cycles per second.
