Economic forces against Green Civilization and Sustainable Development – an evidence from the automotive sector

Stanisław Strzelczak

The presentation discusses relevance of eco-policies when confronted with the economic forces. A real illustrative example from the automotive sector is presented. Although the car discussed is produced in the EU, i.e. within the macro-region known for its pro-eco awareness, it is evident that the auto-maker is mostly interested in the increase of its market, while observing pro-eco regulations, but also directly increasing materials usage, thus natural resources consumption. From the economic point of view this kind of behavior is very rational. Even more, to some extent consumers and producers interests are overlapping. Unfortunately this is at the price of future generations, i.e. against sustainability. The market forces do not work in favor of green economy. Finally, EU regulations are omitting the presented issue, although it is common in many sectors of industry and commerce. The fundamental question is given and discussed: what kind of society and what kind of economy may support green civilization and sustainable growth.

Abstract in PolishW referacie przedstawiono wyniki badań z sektora motoryzacyjnego, dokumentujące równoległość dwóch procesów: działań proekologicznych oraz modyfikacji wyrobów, powodujących zwiększoną konsumpcję surowców naturalnych i energii. Ten drugi trend wynika z konieczności powiększania wolumenu sprzedaży przez przedsiębiorstwa. Ceną za to jest intensyfikacja eksploatacji środowiska naturalnego. Referat omawia potencjalne sposoby przeciwdziałania takiej sytuacji.
