PRELIMINARY RESEARCH ON NiMH BATTERIES: A CASE STUDY

Abstract

The paper presents preliminary tests of a nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) battery in a static load cycle. In herein work the influence of the change of the load current value to the voltage at the battery terminals, the temperature value at the terminals and the body temperature of the battery is presented. On the basis of the conducted tests, it was found that with the increase of the load current above 1C, the useful capacity of the battery significantly decreases as well as its efficiency. Moreover, for SOC in the range from 0 to 0.1 and from 0.9 to 1 there are strong non-linearities of the internal resistance value of the NiMH battery, which are associated with the occurrence of activation and concentration polarization of the battery.
