FAT: Shape optimization software for electromagnetics

Abstract

An effective implementation of the optimal shape design of electromagnetic devices by means of deterministic algorithms is presented. The methodology presented here was implemented within the authors' FE code and successfully applied to many inverse problems. This article focuses on explaining how change of the FE mesh topology during optimization influences the value of the objective function and causes difficulties in the exact calculation of the cost-function gradient. The solution of this problem by means of elliptical regeneration of FE mesh is proposed.
