Optical fringe pattern processing using empirical mode decomposition based algorithms

In the paper we present two fringe pattern processing techniques based on the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) method. This contribution deals with further developments of our previous works. First proposed algorithm decomposes an interferogram into a set of bidimensional empirical mode functions (BIMFs) and consequently reconstructs noise-free and bias-free fringe pattern and normalizes it using the Hilbert spiral transform. Decomposition is conducted using the enhanced fast empirical mode decomposition (EFEMD) algorithm while the reconstruction is performed utilizing the automatic selective reconstruction (ASR) scheme. Presented ASR-EFEMD method augments the SR-FABEMD-HS algorithm recently proposed in – a powerful fringe pattern enhancement and normalization method. The ASR-EFEMD is automatic (no human intervention required) and very fast (novel EFEMD algorithm design and selective reconstruction automation). Second algorithm has been designed for separating quasi-orthogonal fringe families and their enhancement. This type of interferogram is encountered in grating (moiré) interferometry. Fringe families can encode information about in-plane displacements in horizontal and vertical direction, they need to be separated for further evaluation. We propose the orthogonal empirical mode decomposition (OEMD) method for this purpose. Although the OEMD follows the same steps as the EFEMD algorithm it employs one dimensional filters rather than the squared window filters used in the EFEMD. For further enhancement and normalization of extracted fringe sets we use the ASR-EFEMD scheme.
