Numerical simulation of the effect of supplying arteries occlusion on cerebral blood flow

As the brain has high metabolic demand, nature created many mechanism of regulating the cerebral blood flow. One of them is a circulatory anastomosis called Circle of Willis (CoW). Using home-made simulation program a blood flow through CoW was modeled. Different scenarios of supplying arteries occlusion were modeled and analyzed. It was shown that even sizable reduction of its diameters do not perturb the cerebral flow rates. However the flow organization of the whole CoW is changed. It is exhibiting especially in the communicating arteries, which compensates the influence of diminished flow in the occluded artery.
