Abstract

A design concept of a new ionization source for inorganic mass spectrometry based on a 3-phase rotating field helium microwave plasma is described. A stable symmetrical low-flow discharge is formed with a minimum field strength at the centre and it is self-igniting. The nebulized sample is introduced using a laminar dual-flow injector. An experiment about sensitive detection of some metals using this source coupled with time-of-flight mass spectrometer is presented. The absence of polyatomic interferences typical for argon plasma is documented.
