Image segmentation is a process in which from all the picture important information is extracted enabling distinguishing between objects and background of the image. There are several methods of image segmentation depending on different kinds of specimens and usually on some a priori knowledge of the picture. Segmentation consists of clustering and classification. In this paper an improved version of neural network implementation of image segmentation methods is presented. Both clusterization and classification stages can be performed by neural network approach. Theoretical investigations and practical results are described. ©2004 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.
