Application of the Matlab package to study the effect of partial shading of the photovoltaic modules to the waveforms currentvoltage characteristics

Solar energy is one of the major sources of renewable energy. Photovoltaics is the process of converting sunlight directly into electricity using solar cells. The efficiency of PV modules systematically increases and at the same time the manufacturing prices gradually decrease. The performance of the photovoltaic modules is affected by several environmental factors such as wind speed, ambient temperature, humidity, rainfall, incident solar radiation intensity and spectrum, dust deposition, pollution and shadowing. When designing photovoltaic installations, the problem of partial shading of the generator often arises. If it is not possible to avoid this phenomenon, its impact on the operation of the photovoltaic system should be estimated. The classical method is to measure the current-voltage characteristics, but it requires switching off the installation for the duration of measurements. Therefore, the paper proposes a method for using for this purpose a computer simulation in the Matlab package with the implemented component "PV Array". Three different shades of different scale were analyzed. The novelty in this work is the introduction of shading coefficient that characterizes the degree of partial shading of the PV module. The obtained results of the computer simulation were verified for two types of silicon PV modules: mono- and polycrystalline.
