An overview of scheduling algorithms tested over ATM switches

Abstract

The purpose of using schedulers in ATM switches is to allow different traffic streams with broad variety of parameters in terms of band-width as well as QoS requirements, to share network resources in such away to achieve better bandwidth utilization and guarantee required QoS. ATM technology has the potential to handle the above if proper scheduling algorithm is used within the switch. Many scheduling algorithms have been proposed in the literature. In this paper we examine some of these algorithms and compare their performance guarantees and fairness. In particular we apply these algorithms to an ATM multiplexer and evaluate the performance figures.
