Bifurcation of a Shaft under Magnetic Load

Abstract

The aim of the paper is to examine interaction between two different instability effects in flexible shafts - rotation in presence of material friction and transverse force of magnetic nature. Such problems arise for instance in multipole induction electric motors and in active vibration control of high-speed shafts utilising magnetic actuation. A simple magnetomechanical model of the rotor displaying both divergence and flutter instability effects is assumed treating two-sided magnetic actuators as sources of deflection-dependent generally nonlinear force of possibly positive or negative sign. The stability region of the trivial equilibrium as well as the near-critical limit cycles are studied to explain the interaction of both instability effects and the role of the magnetic load.
