New approach for examination of the displacement sensor characteristics
AbstractAn unconventional low-cost method for determining characteristics of sensors measuring displacements is presented. The method does not require any length reference instruments. It is based on examination of the harmonic contents in the sensor output signal when the measured signal is a regular sinusoidal wave. The generator of the input signal consists of an element that has a precisely round cross-section profile (e.g. an accurately manufactured shaft) eccentric to the axis of rotation and of a plunger with rectilinear tip. The eccentricity of the round element should be slightly smaller than half of the sensor measuring range. During rotation the element causes periodical sinusoidal displacements of the plunger. Coefficients of an algebraic polynomial that approximates the sensor’s characteristics are connected with harmonics of the output signal and they can be calculated on the grounds of equations presented in the paper. It allows numerical compensation of the sensor’s non-linearity.
