On the Impact of the Contact Model on Predicted Traction Forces Developed by Wheels of a Locomotive on Curve

Abstract

Abstract This paper is concerned with the influence of the contact model on predicted development of traction forces by wheels of a locomotive on curve. Curving of a locomotive developing traction effort has been outlined for regular contact conditions. For realistic, measured wheel/rail profiles two approaches to contact description have been employed: non-Hertzian method used on-line and method using ellipticization of pre-calculated non-Hertzian contact. Traction forces and the axle slip as predicted for these two descriptions have been analyzed and compared.
