Bridge Strengthening by Reinforcement Bonding - Strength and Aesthetics

Grażyna Łagoda , Marek ŁAGODA

Abstract

Summary The necessity of bridge strengthening was caused by the change of load conditions, which appeared in the last twenty years. Steel plates as well as composite materials give a great opportunity of bridge strengthening. Up to the present moment there were tens of bridges strengthened with the bonded steel plate (the very first one in 1966), four made up with carbon fibre reinforced plastic strip (1996-1998) and three ones with carbon fibre reinforced plastic strips and sheets (1997-1998). The applications were preceded with laboratory test. There is a current question on durability and future behaviour of this particular way of strengthening, apart from hasty results of implementing this method. The above mentioned cases are treated as a run of field tests.
