The paper provides an account of uses where advanced oxidation processes(AOP)are applicable,particular consideration being given to the removal of hazardous pollutants from water taken in for municipal supply.Examples of AOP development are given as well.The general principle of the AOPis to form highly reactive free radical (specifically hydroxyl radicals) in the aqueous medium.To produce these species use is made of ozone,hydrogen peroxide,UV radaition,catalysts (TiO2,MnO2,Fe2+)-single of in combinations-if beneficial synergetic effects are abserved.The mechanisms governing the AOP process,as well as a variety of engineering applications, are discussed in detail.The AOP is particularly useful in removing non-biodegradable water pollutants which are resistant to conventional treatment.
