The Institute of Metrology and Biomedical Engineering-IMiIB-is one of the three Institutes of the Faculty of Mechatronics at the Warsaw University of Technology. The Institute employs 54 people, including 46 academic teachers. The Institute conducts research in the following areas: electronic and precision products, technology, quality engineering, sensors and measurement systems, measurement of micro-and macrogeometry of surfaces, coordinate measuring technology, methods and equipment for tissue structures imaging, electronic control systems, modeling and analysis of selected processes and biological signals. Within education provided by the Faculty of Mechatronics at first and second level degree studies, the Institute conducts classes at two fields of studies: Mechatronics and Biomedical Engineering, on the following specializations: Electronic Measurement Systems, Quality Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering of Mechatronic Products, Multimedia Techniques, Electrical Medical Equipment, Medical Instrumentation. The Institute consists of five departments which realize scientific, teaching and research activities in the following areas: The Department of Biomedical Engineering Research realized by this Department includes the methods and equipment for medical diagnosis and biomedical signal processing, including: applications of ultrasonic techniques for evaluation of motor activity of the fetus, description of the properties of tissues and circulatory system; processing and analysis of signals and images for the purposes of medical diagnosis; assist of the diagnosis of degenerative diseases with the use of the methods of artificial intelligence (neural networks, expert systems); equipment for electromagnetic examination of tissue properties. The Department of Medical and Industrial Electronics Research realized by this Department includes the methods and devices for visualization of tissue structures and functional stimulation, including: methods and devices for detection ionizing radiation and visualization of internal organs; restitution and support of locomotive function in paralysis or paresis of the lower limbs; walking support in a partial paralysis and cerebral palsy. The Department of Metrology and Quality Engineering Research realized by this Department includes the methods of measurement of geometric quantities covering the coordinate techniques, including measurements of micro and macrogeometry of high accuracy surface for nanotechnology, laser interferometry, and industrial measuring CT scan and quality control systems. The Department of Sensors and Measurement Systems Research realized by this Department includes sensors and measuring systems, including magnetoelastic sensors for mass, stresses, and torque moment measurements; measurement and diagnostic infrastructure for far-reaching pipelines, in particular leak detection systems; systems for the transported media stream measurement; optical measuring methods for gas-to-dust ratio evaluation. Scientific studies also include multimedia technology for the needs of the information society, e.g.: audiovisual information compression methods, interactive tools for university-level education, perception of audiovisual stimulus, projections of laser light and the search for new lighting effects. The Department of Precision and Electronic Products Technology Research realized by this Department includes the methods, techniques and equipment for the manufacture of precision and electronic equipment, including: technology, installation of electronic and microelectronic elements and sub-assemblies investigation nanomaterials for surface mounting and testing of advanced techniques for the manufacture of miniature electronic thin-and components thick layered, printed electronics, as well as microinjection of precision components, laser and electroerosive and making microopenings micromachining.
